Part One of a Two-Part Special Event
Games that perform beyond expectations (in either direction) get turned into teachable moments. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not only a breakout hit but slots neatly into existing industry discourse: this is how westerners are fixing the JRPG genre

"Sometimes a more enthusiastic (some might say naïve) approach works well because when people aren’t aware of limitations they aren’t bound by them." - excellent, corresponds with Orson Well's self-professed 'ignorance' that he embraced when producing Citizen Kane.

I wonder Kojima intentionally shields his team from potential negative backlash from the games that his team creates. I don't disagree that maybe there could be more celebration of the people behind the games, but at the same time, they may not want to be exposed to a lot of negativity coming from gamers. Indie studios are probably very aware of this too, choosing to remain hidden in case the next game they produce doesn't go as planned?

Video Games are Good

As Motivators of Curiosity
In Queensland Australia one can find the wonderfully named, University of Sunshine Coast. Recently coming out of this university is a study that reveals an equally wonderful paradox: that intellectual passion can emerge not just from instruction and classrooms but from playful engagement.

What did I get up to at the conference expo and indie gaming event?
Disclaimer: I am currently not working in the industry but I used to and was also job hunting while at the expo… I know, it is not good time.

Men Should Stop Playing Video Games

When I was in the 4th grade, the Nintendo 64 made its grand debut and soon asserted itself as the new must-have console for every household with a child. Games like Mario Kart, Starfox 64, and The Legend of Zelda, too, became household names, and their respective characters were well recognized.

Time gets more and more précieuse and choices have to bé made. Personally I enjoy playing games, but 1) not massive ones, personally I like the roguelite formula because you can have a short session and still have some sense of progress; 2) I've given up with TV series. It just came natural that way

Skateboarding, Video Games, And Indie Rock

In the latest B-side from SUCH GREAT HEIGHTS, Brendan Menapace explains how skateboarders used indie rock in 2000s skate videos. PLUS: We touch on how video games turned young millennials on to indie.
I’m going to tell you a secret about my book SUCH GREAT HEIGHTS: The Complete Cultural History of the Indie Rock Explosion: The history it tells is not totally complete.

Play-through: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the wild - Part 2

Chronicle of my play through of The Legend of Zelda BotW on Switch 2.
Play-through: is a new format where I will be writing in more of a diary format for bigger games that I am playing. The first game I am trialing this with is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on Switch 2.

The "inventory full" and can't drop weapon thing is fixed in Tears of The Kingdom, if you get around to that!
No spoilers, but if you see an island wayyyyy off the coast of a certain beach town, make sure you eventually go there, it is indeed possible ;)

What Video Game Series Pass the Five-Games Test?

Take your seats, Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, God of War, and SteamWorld.
Back in 2011, music journalist Steven Hyden sought to reinvent the way we measure the success of a particular band or artist. You see, traditionally, music acts would be judged by either their commercial success (how many albums or singles have they sold) and/or their critical success (how strong are the reviews for said albums and singles). Hyden intro…

Really great concept for an article and I agree with all your picks from the series that I’ve played here
Also came to a horrible realisation that my favourite series: Metal Gear Solid probably doesn’t pass the test. 1 - 3 are universally beloved, MGS4 is a hot mess but still enjoyable and MGS5 is quite divisive.

When we let kids be present through the quiet parts, the inconvenient parts, even the boring parts, we're helping them build patience, resilience, and a sense of belonging. When things go a little bit sideways is usually when best family memories are made. Screens might keep them quiet, but they also keep them out of the story.

Mustard also loves the Tony Hawk game soundtracks. Very influential for a young condiment.
The Grand Theft Auto: Vice City soundtrack is something they have fond memories of. Just the other day they were in a store and a song from the soundtrack played and it immediately connected them to Vice City.
Currently Mustard really enjoys the Stardew Valley and Undertale soundtracks.

A Tuesday Top 10 change of pace
So, I am currently chasing two very heavy stories — one involving the shooting death of a local child. I almost didn’t do one of these this week, however, I learned today is National Video Game Day, and decided that we all could use something fun as a little treat. So, what’s a better treat than a Tuesday Top 10 we can argue about on social media?
