Rediscovered and Redeemed Makeup

Recent adventures in shopping my stash, retrying products that (I thought) didn't work for me, and rediscovering old favorites
I test new makeup products nearly every day and at this point if a product isn’t immediately promising or so offensive I need to warn everyone I know away from buying it, it will tend to get lost in the back of my makeup drawers. At some point I’ll make my way back to the products I wasn’t sure about and deliberately test it out some more, and that’s wh…

LOVE the aboutface foundation and was so surprised earlier this year when it didn’t work for you. So glad you’re loving it now. I also love the JRB the best eyeshadows- so simple, good formula, but can be sheer or beautifully built up. My fave is penny!

Do you know, it doesn’t really matter how it is judged**, what matters is that you have listened and believe that this project makes a difference, and in that you will already have made these womens’ lives better. That you are willing to risk criticism to create this garden demonstrates your own strength.
**although it will of course be gorgeous and a gold would be nice!

There was absolutely no way you could say no to this project Jo. It was fate. I can’t wait to see the story unfold. I was so inspired by the Glasshouse women at this year’s Chelsea. They have the perfect designer for their garden now.

The Lost Beauty

By Beth Yarbrough
Yesterday’s interview with Watson Brown on the merits of historic architecture included his observation that even the simple farmhouses had character. I was reminded of an old beauty not far from me in Cleveland County. It was demolished last year, but here was my commentary on it not long after I took this photo several years ago.

breaking down the best of the best
Hi friends! Can I first just say this has been a loooong time coming? To me, sharing the contents of your vanity/medicine cabinet is intimate! Something I don’t take lightly. I’ve also been trying products mentioned here since summer- I take my recs seriously and want to try things more than once before sharing. Some things, like

Dignity, Style, Beauty

Style Memo #174
The world doesn’t need to be as ugly as it is. Yes, there are things in life that are ugly and unpleasant no matter what we do. There are emotions, situations, relationships and moments that are hard to bear and no matter how hard we try, we can't change them. There is so much we cannot control, so much that rests in God's hands. Yet, there is much we c…

Bad Day Beauty

We All Have Them
Some days I look in the mirror and just shake my head and say, "Yikes." (That was me this morning.) I know it usually coincides with how I feel. I'm a bit jet-lagged, and my sleep hasn’t caught up. Plus, two glorious weeks of feta cheese and filo dough in Greece don’t help. Here’s what I do to get through it:

That was definitely me this morning. Feeling a little under the weather so herbal tea was the ticket. JRB neutralizer pencil plus my face pencil and a little bit of English rose lip and cheek stick. The only thing I didn't do well enough was continue to hydrate.

I wish I liked the Violette bisou balms more than I do. I'm excited for the Merit lip blush being further developed as I remember you said recently that it's more hydrating but with a similar soft matte look. Just based on your swatch it looks like the Merit has more color payoff than the bisou balms as well, which I appreciate. Maybe it's my skin tone or it's unrealistic expectations about what a "kiss of color" means but I just don't see much of anything when I wear them with the exception of Sucette.

Unexpected Meetings with Beauty

Embrace seasonal serendipity in nature
These voiceovers are recorded ‘in the field’ with ambient sounds and occasional stumbles. My aim is to give you an evocation of place and a moment of tranquility, though this week you might just be able to hear distant shotguns: it’s pheasant season, a ‘sport’ I fail to understand.

Effortless Flush∙Makeup Bag Monday 10/28/24

Recently I got a lash lift and the result was even less effort in my daily makeup routine.
There’s a few things I’ve tried over the years that are high maintenance to be low maintenance everyday and I think the lash lift has trumped professional lash extensions and DIY lash extensions. Now I do use Revitalash and my lashes are crazy long, so with the lash lift it looks almost unreal, but very natural at the same time. What I always wished ext…

Psithurism: the sound of wind whispering through trees, the soft rustling of leaves.

I decided until the end of the week to enjoy this. I’m glad I did. I’m now fully relaxed.
I did see the hidden acorn. I’m curious, do you pronounce it ay’ curn or ay’ corn? I have an audiobook version of Sand County Almanac, by Aldo Leopold that is narrated by Stewart Udall and he pronounces it ay’ curn. I don’t know if it’s a Midwest thing.
Also, can you dm me about the meadowlark photo? As you are well aware, they are my happy bird, and humanity’s sole purpose for existence is to build fences for meadowlarks to stand on and sing, and to build fireplaces and sofas for dogs to enjoy.

Beautiful photos this morning, love the Meadow Lark in flight.
Ironically, my sister sent me the same word just yesterday,“Psithurism”
I told her, I thought it interesting that there is a word , but I would rather use the descriptive definition than the noun.
Made me think of Aristotle’s quote, but in reverse. The parts are greater than the whole.🤭

Me too! I love standing below a tree and watching the leaves swirl , ‘hitching a ride’ on the wind.

Why Is Luxury So Obsessed With Scent?

Beyond Beauty
Still inspired by Art Basel Paris, thinking beyond the obvious and embracing the strange and unexpected allows us to discover what’s next. On the Edge of Beauty

Have you ever experienced awe and anger simultaneously?
If you ask ChatGPT to describe KL Rahul in a couple of lines, it will start lagging. Then the blinking cursor will move - writing and erasing in loops - and eventually serve up a reduction of his career statistics as its best attempt. Listen closely, and you might hear Rahul’s soft voice through the text-to-speech prompt: “Don't bother, man.”

Dear Mr Sarthak. Am a first-time reader of your writing. I don't know why, of all the millions of Substack essays out 'there' I chose to read yours. By Jove! Your writing filled me up. Like Mr Sanket said, 'sublime'. It kind of reminded me of Rohit Brijnath, but no, this was an ode and a plea to K L Rahul. I like him but, yes, seems exactly as you portrayed him, summer gone and autumn leaves falling - in these days of 'instant' and so much scratching at the door of opportunity, he needs to have 'the rest is history' moment/s from hereon. Or like that other firebrand Sanju Samson, he may just be a flame flattering to deceive before he rages into a roaring fire of beautiful, sublime batting. Please do write about Sanju too. Thank you. Beautiful. Am reading this poetic essay again.
Sanket
Sarthak such sublime writing. The story telling!!

I loved Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow. I was supposed to be reading it with my husband but I tore through it too fast.
