I do not agree with this take. When we started this company in 2017, a well-known newsletter writer who charged for her pre-Substack newsletter said: “Well, I got in early and I don’t really think this will work for others now.” Turns out she was quite wrong about that.

The market for substacks is growing and it’s only just getting start…

Emily’s take here is so refreshing. She identifies how she has benefitted from Substack (and being an early user), but also calls out that this success isn’t realistic for everyone, given their current model.

In my POV, sponsorships are likely the best way forward for more than a small fraction of writers to make a living here.

While Feed Me has benefitted from Substack highlighting my work, I also recognize the first-mover advantage I had by being an early user. It’s far too simple to tell writers that if they join today, they can make a living here. Although I want people to get paid for their writing, I find the bar is really high for me to pay for new subscriptions. I am curious what you all think: Do you see Substack as a place to build a business? A place to write and share your thoughts with friends? A social media platform? A side hustle? Or simply the technology that delivers your favorite newsletters to your inbox?
