I'm not Biden's cheerleader. I'm a cheerleader for immigrants. I taught immigrants, many of whom started out as CNA or as house cleaners or in other jobs and became entrepreneurs when their English skills improved. When my highly educated grandfather emigrated, he worked in the garment industry. He taught me to look at seams and hems before I bought clothes. When my grandmother and her siblings came to the U.S., a couple at a time, they too had menial jobs. Their children grew up to be professors and artists. I never asked them exactly how they came to this country. My impression was that they saved up got on a boat, passed through Ellis Island, saved up some more, and, little by little, brought the whole family here. Maybe you can tell me what kinds of procedures that had to go through in order to come here. I always thought that when they finally faced enough peril, they were motivated to leave home and start a new life in a new country using a new language.
