It's not illegal to "lie about your claim for asylum." If your claim has no merit you will be turned away at the Border Patrol post. Most claim they are fleeing poverty and violent crime. Those things are sad, but US refugee laws do not give you refugee status for poverty and crime. Even if your claim is completely fake, it's not illegal. I assume they just deny your status and send you back. There's no violation of the law.
