My wife and I were out to dinner a couple weeks before Christmas. Mostly a wine bar . Food ranged from good to excellent depending on how fresh the fish was. There's always a free glass of the evening special wine available. We were seated. The waiter came over and we ordered the free wine. He left and I went up to go to the restroom. On the way back , I ran into a couple we knew. Good friends of my daughter and her husband. We've known them 20 years. Their kids grew up with my grandkids. I hadn't seen them in a couple months. We did Big Hellos andI asked them to come join us. They admitted to being pretty drunk but it was okay because they had a room across the street at a hotel. They pointed to a half full sangria pitcher on their table and admitted that it was their third one. They slid the picture over to me and said "You take it. We're already a little worried about getting across the street" I thanked them, said goodbyes and took the pictcher back to my table. My wife looked at the sangria with one of those wifely questioning looks she's perfected over the last 40 years. Just then, the couple came by and we all said hello and they said good night. I sat down and the waiter came over to take our orders. He looked at the picture of sangria with one of those waiterly questioning looks. I pointed to an empty unbussed table. "It was just sitting there" He just looked at me. I'd gone way off script in our waiter/ customer relations. " You're not supposed to do that" he finally said. I gave him one of those hands-up, slightly tilted head " What are you going to do?" looks. I finally told him" I'll take the seared tuna and roasted vegetables. " He dutifully wrote it down. I pointed to the pitcher. " And a glass too, please" He took my wife's order, left, then return with a glass for me. A few minutes later we saw him talking to the manager and indicating us. My wife asked if she thought they would let us take our food with us if they kicked us out.
