The fundamental problem with progressivism — and I say this as someone who was a leftist for my entire life, until maybe five years ago—is that progressives want there to be a different reality than the one that is, and become angered when confronted with reality, and blame whoever is presenting that reality to them for being the perpetrator of whatever unpleasant or imperfect reality presented.
The conventional wisdom not so long ago was that Trump was either doomed to irrelevance or prison. Now, he's a world-historical figure, ushering in a new era of populist nationalism. The irony is that he wouldn't be playing that role had Democrats not tried to put him in prison.

I've been getting lots of messages from Syrians begging me to tell the world what's going on right now.
They want to stay anonymous out of fear of being killed by the government.
They've told me that women, children and the elderly have been slaughtered.
Fathers have been murdered in front of their children.
And they say that the islamist government is trying to cover it up.
Christians and other minorities are being massacred in Syria and the mainstream media is silent.

I hope WSJ soon writes about this. It will be wonderful to read.
A respectful edit for Mr. Trofimov: “will soon be considered” could be shortened to “has become.” Or, shorter still, “is now.”
The domino effect will reverberate in the supply chain of defense contractors too. I can’t figure out what the end game is here. Defense contracts take a long time to procure and US contractors are a significant part of our GDP.
The end game will be that Europe rearming will be a too-big, rich market, and someone will send the Praetorian Guard after Emperor Krasnov because he’s tanking the US economy and denying the US market shares. But it will also mean a larger European defence industry.
Europe should seize all US hardware as a threat to Euro security. Because it is now.
I wondered when this would come up. A slap at the US military industry in the short run becomes punch in the face in the long run.
That’s their goal. Make America untrusted.
