People forget that when a person/family is down and out, the idea of scraping together the money for the next light bill is a challenge. How can folks in dire straits be expected to get the money together to move? Pay 1st, last and security? Pay utilities deposits? Do they have a vehicle that will get them from point A to B? And the very idea that folks in that situation can get a loan to facilitate any of this is laughable. If a BIPOC in that situation is looking for a loan, good luck. It's time we all face up to the reality we live in. A person being a Democrats or Progressive doesn't necessarily mean they have a better grip on financial reality than a Trumpists. A well paid Democrat or Progressive who has flexibility and choices, a company who will move them, has extensive borrowing ability cannot understand what it is like to lack those privileges. Even some people who have lived in poverty, once they've escape it, they forget how bad it was and how hard it was to escape it. I don't know what the answer is but I do know that it is counter productive to say pull yourself up by your bootstraps. It's arrogant and demeaning. It's going to be a hard fought battle to address the things we are missing to build a society based on the needs of the common good when there is so much greed baked into our system. Hell, we can't even get people to take a free covid vaccine for the common good. Sigh.
