I just read a story on the bbc.com website from 2 hours ago where the IDF denies reports about Israeli tanks in the vicinity of Damascus. Moreover, they claim that reports of IDF personnel in Syria are false. They say they have moved into a buffer zone where UN troops are located and the moves are precautionary and temporary.
This answers my previous questions: No and No.
Some historical perspective: Near the end of the 1973 War, Israel had an open road to Damascus. They only proceeded to within long-range artillery distance from Damascus to send a message for end-of-war negotiation purposes. They did not want to get bogged down in a land war in Syria. Similar thinking would apply now. That’s why I was surprised and alarmed at the erroneous reports. There was a Netanyahu press conference earlier that may have muddied the waters in a fluid environment.
They are just destroying advanced weapons systems. Israel has no need, desire or even capacity to occupy Syria.
The main reason I responded is that someone on Substack reported that Bibi Netanyahu gave a press conference to the Israeli media in which he said the Golan Heights would be a permanent part of Israel. (This is not itself a problem.)
Though I don’t know if that’s accurate (I didn’t see the presser), I was worried that Netanyahu had also ordered the IDF into Damascus (Gantz is no longer in the War Cabinet). That would contradict longstanding Israeli policy (since 1973, at least). However, Netanya…
