Sensory memories are short-lived but can enter short-term memory if attended. Cognitive processing of auditory and visual representations in the current context are managed in long-term working memory by a central executive. Long-term memories are retrieved into the working memory. The duration of long-term working memories are extended with rehearsal and can be consolidated into long-term memory during sleep.
