Yes a shock and awe would have worked, that is not the issue, it is what happens AFTER the shock and awe campaign, which would be an insurgency. You can run an insurgency anywhere, espec if the goal is not to win but to wear down the opponent. Which would be the goal in this case and Ukraine was not the win, it was the pawn. To weaken and overthrow Russia was the goal. Just because Afghanistan was a different place in a different time doesn't negate the US goal being the same as in Afghanistan; to weaken Russia. Sure Russia made mistakes, there are always mistakes in any complex effort, espec war.
