Obama described the federal government as a battleship - it takes a long time to turn. Trump took this lesson to heart - "If we can't turn the battleship, we can sure as hell sink it."
At a bare minimum, it will be exceedingly difficult for the next Dem administration to put things back together, and that's if they have, not just a trifecta, but a durable trifecta like FDR had that can hold together for several elections. It's certainly possible that we'll see a cataclysm like the Great Depression that could bring about a huge coalition in opposition, but (a) cataclysms are bad, and (b) sometimes just lead to more cataclysms.
