I was in a PhD program in the early 1980's, working on the regulation of DNA transcription in viruses. It became apparent pretty quickly how corrupt and PC the entire grant funding mechanism was even then. I was massively disillusioned. The best and most original science occurred when the gov't was entirely removed from it.
