It's not applying it to the spirit world, it's applying it to extant documents. They bear more resemblance to Gilgamesh or other mythical figures than historical records, that's the bottom line. People can believe whatever they want to believe, i'm pretty sure there is just a man-made myth here with an interesting pedigree.
