Education requires practical skill at application, but education is a large category and the devil (or angel?) is in the details. DeSantis sorts have one idea of education, Frances Perkins (who also taught) would presumably have had a very different perspective.
In my lifetime I ave sensed a shift away from providing a comprehensive kit of life skills (including "civics") toward an more exclusive focus on vocational training. Vocational training of some sort is essential, but I favor those in foundational education those that enable us to be creative, adaptive, and resilient, at least so far as possible, in whatever circumstances come up, including on the job. To often, it seems to me that what massive commercial organizations seek is standardized, interchangeable, disposable robots in human form.
I also believe that we neglect training to develop alternative and actionable strategies in favor of focusing on tactics. If we are going to pilot the path of our own society with "liberty and justice for all" (did I mention, "for all"?) we have to be able to see the forest as well as the trees.
