I had a postdoc at Georgetown, and I am sorry to see the administration there footing the bill for their students' infantilization (paying for the take-out for their sit-in). But I can't believe this is typical for the Georgetown student body. I teach at one of the major universities in Boston and my wife teaches at another. This is not what we encounter. When I was in college in the 80's there were activist circles and there are activist circles today. In both cases they were a fringe. The ones today may take more pleasure in being incensed than the ones in the 80's (maybe), but there isn't that great a difference. What has changed is that the administration is afraid to stand up to the students in many, though not all, cases. And there too I wonder how different this is from the kind of corporate political posturing we are seeing in the private sector.
