The school was Wendell Phillips High School, 35 hundred south for those who know Chicago....down the street from the White Sox Park. In those days, middle 60s, there were also all those high rise slums which have since come down. I suspect the males were around, just not listed. For the record, I do not mind knowing that I have had and still do have white privilege. Nobody follows me around in stores. And I listened to two women guests of our neighbor diss first Blacks, and then Native Americans. They were judging background by looks, a mistake. As a woman, i am regarded as a second class person by some as well. I am also well educated, well read, articulate and overweight, so all those are marks against me. Not everybody of course, but enough to notice. My husband has Lakota ancestry, so we are tuned in to that as well. He has one relative who wasn't Native American looking enough for the res, but is too white looking for people to believe that she is even a tad Native American....a source of frustration for her.
