"nobody really knows the difference between diligent reviewers, gatekeeping assholes, and people who toss off three careless sentences in terms of public reputation." This, to me, is one of the biggest hang-ups: I have strong normative reasons to try to be a good reviewer (try) but it does consistently seem thankless, and it doesn't really spill over into anything else. I'm unusually apathetic about the idea that companies profit from this; they profit from a lot, after all. But it does increasingly seem annoying, more than anything, that it's all an obligation and often somewhat unrewarding.
