CARMEL IMPOSES NEW VACCINATION, MASK RULES AT CITY BUILDINGS

With California poised to lift indoor mask mandates even for the unvaccinated, and most schools set to lift masking requirements starting March 12, the Carmel City Council moved decisively in the other direction this afternoon, unanimously adopting an emergency ordinance requiring all members of the public who enter city hall, the lobby at the police department, the public works lobby and the library to provide proof of vaccination, including boosters.

Everyone inside city buildings will also have to wear a mask at all times.

"In order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, it is necessary for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health and safety to adopt rules of conduct at city facilities,” the council found.

City employees are not subject to the same mandates, however. They must be vaccinated or undergo tests twice a week.

The city council’s abrupt move comes as coronavirus cases continue to decline rapidly. The county’s current 7-day average of new cases per day per 100,000 residents is 20.1, according to data from the county health department ( https://pineconearchive.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=422e88fa64bd38ff3aa40ae0a&id=20ccd3cf20&e=f972558314 ). Statewide, the average is 19.5, the CDP said. (https://covid19.ca.gov/state-dashboard/ )
