Átlátszó reports that, in the final days before Hungary’s election, more than 11 tonnes of food packages were handed out in targeted constituencies through Fidesz-linked Roma organisations, with documents and videos pointing to a highly organised operation in places like Békés county.
Anyone who has watched Fidesz’s treatment of Roma communities will recognise the logic at once. Years of segregation in schools, discrimination in work and healthcare, and political abandonment, then suddenly the network arrives with food parcels when the vote is close. Orbán’s systems keeps people vulnerable, then tries to cash in on the vulnerability.
Átlátszó deserves real credit. It has kept producing brave, first-rate investigative journalism under relentless pressure.
