Albania has drawn a line.

After days of massive protests that shut down parts of the capital, pressure is mounting on the government to take action. Sazan Island remains at the centre of a growing controversy over a proposed €1.4 billion luxury development deal. The project aims to turn the former communist military base – a protected marine reserve and home to endangered flamingos, loggerhead sea turtles, and Mediterranean monk seals – into an exclusive private playground for the global elite.

The controversy follows an unprecedented wave of resistance. Thousands of protesters flooded the streets of Tirana, carrying pink inflatable flamingos and chanting, “Albania is not for sale.” Their unified demand was clear: stop the project and protect their native coastlines from privatisation by foreign investors.

Faced with mounting public anger and a widening anti-corruption probe by the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK), the government is under increasing pressure to respond. The protests have sent a resounding message to foreign billionaires and developers: you cannot bulldoze our laws, you cannot bypass environmental protections, and you cannot buy our land.

This growing movement for citizen-led activism shows how the collective voice of a nation can challenge backroom deals and fight to protect sovereign land.
