FIGHT CLUB (𝖘𝖚𝖇 Movie Essay) Sept 3rd 2022 7:31 AM

It’s a daydream and a nightmare at the same time. We never find out his real name, but we do know Tyler. He’s a manifested alter ego of himself who manages to instill that same ego into all of his clones. These minions wear all black, and together, as a cult, they create chaos. Chaos that leads to a loss; a lost person or a lost friend, like Robert Paulson or Tyler himself.

Tyler is his greatest loss, until he isn’t. He dies and rebirths so many times. And his extreme lack of sleep, caused by overthinking, leaves him unable to distinguish one reality from another. Just like each day which broke down to each minute. He micro-dosed the person he both hates and loves the most. Even more so than Marla. And although it may seem like he hates her in the beginning, he eventually realizes that he’s been projecting onto her the entire time. In reality, he admires her. They’re also very much alike, but the difference is that Marla is present, and he isn’t. She observes the chaos while he’s allowed it to consume him completely. That’s where she and Tyler relate, but also don’t.

Since we never learn his real name, I guess, in a sense, that just like Tyler told Tyler, he needs himself to survive. The same way he needed Marla to reach this conclusion. He couldn’t understand his own attraction to her at first because he was letting his own ego get in the way. Tyler had to become one with Tyler to understand his love for Marla. And within that, came clarity. In literally the most chaotic way.
