I’m just…I’m not sure how I feel reading this?

The below is the title from the latest On Substack piece, aka the substack from Substack. Fine. Of course it’s in their best interest to publish interviews where successful writers drop juicy lines like these hyping their *literal* overnight success after spending 20 minutes spinning up their new pub.

Most of us are not out here making $100k+ a year from our stacks. Most of us are not out here with even double digit paid subscribers. Most of us literally squeal in our seats when we see we’ve nabbed one new free subscriber somewhere from the intervoids.

Supporting yourself via Substack can and arguably should be aspirational! We need to put aside the righteous virtue signaling and stop guilting ourselves for seeking to make money off our labor on a platform that self-purports money making. How else are titles like these, chosen by Substack itself, supposed to be interpreted??

But it’s exhausting. It distorts the realities. I don’t want to read about overnight successes from folks who migrated over here after a seasoned, multi-decades career carrying an established audience. This is not aspirational. It’s not exceptional. It just kinda hurts.

Honestly, what do you all think? I genuinely want to hear if this kind of content lights a fire or makes you cry into a pillow.
