Every dollar spent on Alberta’s healthcare system comes from taxpayers. The provincial government funds the large majority through Alberta income taxes, corporate taxes, and resource revenues paid by Albertans. The federal government contributes a smaller portion through the Canada Health Transfer (CHT) — money that is also raised from Canadian taxpayers, including those in Alberta. Importantly, this federal transfer is distributed on an equal per-person basis across all provinces, so Alberta receives the exact same dollar amount per resident as every other province. In short, there is no ‘free’ federal money, and Alberta is not being short-changed on the transfer — taxpayers fund it all.
The mismanagement of Alberta’s healthcare funds occurs at the provincial level — full stop. Healthcare delivery and budgeting are the sole responsibility of the Alberta government, which is fully accountable to Alberta taxpayers. #FightBackNow
