In The NY Times today, James Carville proposes a new Democratic strategy: “roll over and play dead.” Let the Republicans wreak havoc. Let them pass more tax cuts for the wealthy and tank the US economy. Let them default on the national debt and tank the world economy. Let them cut Medicaid and food stamps and vaccines. When kids are starving, sick and dead and people have lost their retirement and are living in poverty, Republicans will crater in the polls and Democrats can swoop in, win in the next elections and save the day!
Let’s put aside whether there will be free and fair elections in 2026.
Our strategy is to let kids get sick and die? It’s already happening in Texas: 100 kids with measles, a quarter of them hospitalized. The Dow and NASDAQ and S&P are down already since Trump took office. I went grocery shopping the other day. It’s not just egg prices that are at an all-time high. Inflation, which seemed finally to be coming under control, jumped to 3% since Trump took office, and that’s before the effects of tariffs have kicked in.
Are children and retirees the collateral damage we’re willing to accept in favor of the long game? And that’s just the US citizens. How many thousands of Ukrainians will die because of Trump’s cozying up to Russia? What country will Putin invade next? How many people are already starving in Africa now that USAID food relief has been halted? How many family farms in the US are already going under?
Carville speaks of rope-a-dope: take the body blows and knock ‘em out in the 8th round! The only problem is, the ones taking the body blows will be kids, and the elderly, and the sick and the poor. Who are we willing to let suffer and die in hopes of a glorious comeback years down the line? Are we willing to trade “above all else, do no harm” for “the good of the many over the good of the few?”
Measles outbreaks, inflation up, economy down… why can’t Democrats unify behind these simple and powerful messages and go on the attack? Repeat them over, and over on every platform like the Republicans do so effectively.
God knows that I support trans rights, my friends are being erased, but we need to focus on messaging that resonates with middle-America right now. There is blood in the water, Democrats. Be a fucking shark.
