They do not believe in medical interventions. There was a group of them living in the area of Lane County where I worked. I can think of (only one cup of magic bean juice on board, so consider that) at least half a dozen "in home deaths" that were preventable had people chosen to seek medical help with two pregnancies (one causing death of both child and mother, the other mother only), one who died of sepsis following a hunting injury (deep cut to his leg). The 6th was my investigation of a 15 year old who died from untreated appendicitis.
My investigation was the only one where we had any sort of involvement with "higher ups" than patrol doing the investigation, including the DA's office, who sent their lead homicide prosecutor to the scene. In this case, he charged Manslaughter I (knowledge of risk of death and extreme disregard for proper actions) and the parents* pled guilty to Criminally Negligent Homicide and had no jail time.
*Parents. A blended family of woman (with three kids) and man (with four kids) who had each lost their spouse in one of the events I mentioned above.
This was personally a very difficult case for me, because on the one hand, I believe ABSOLUTELY in the right of religious freedom (including freedom from religion, especially Christianity) and on the other, how do you permit the action that causes the death of a child.
