If I spent my twenties trying to surround myself with “cool” people, the penny dropped in my thirties that warmth was a finer attribute. Radiators, not drains. Floral designer and broadcaster Hazel Gardiner is undeniably the former, the kind of woman I think of as a hoot, who is unafraid to show her excitement or affection - two things that, as an equally excitable and affectionate person, I have often felt people expect to be shrunken down. She sings “Good Morning” to me in her voicenotes. She sends encouraging invitations in biscuit form through the post. She has, frankly, impeccable taste. We can all take a collective sigh: we’ve finally reached Spring. The clocks have gone forward. So many of our devices - among them, my alarm clock - now automatically change time, which ironically confuddles my brain. As with most mysterious technology, I’ve found it’s best not to question it unless you want to find yourself on YouTube looking at AI robots, which inevitably get added to the 2am worry list.
Now we’re officially gaining daylight I’m daring to think of the summer ahead. I’m a forward planner, much to the annoyance of my other half, who likes to leave getting a coffee until the departures board is screaming BOARDING. Longer, balmier days may feel distant but that’s all the more reason to get ahead of the masses and pick up summer essentials. These are mine:
