New read-aloud voices, quote restacks, and Note stats
Substack Bulletin: news, resources, and community updates
Welcome to another edition of the Substack Bulletin, where publishers get a roundup of the latest news, resources, and events in one place. As we close out the year, we’re featuring product updates that increase engagement with posts and Notes, analyzing the implications for publishers of the impending TikTok ban in the U.S, and highlighting recent creator events.
We’re constantly seeking ways to improve this series, so don’t hesitate to share your feedback or suggestions in the comments.
News
A redesign of quote restacks. We’ve given quote restacks a fresh new look. The updated layout treats the selected quote like an image in the feed, and readers can now customize the background color and text alignment before posting. The process remains the same: highlight the text you want to share, then click “Restack” when prompted. Learn more about restacking here.
Measure your impact with Notes stats. Notes are a powerful way to gain new subscribers and connect within the Substack network. Now publishers can measure the impact of their Notes with new stats, including revenue generated, new paid and free subscribers, new followers, total clicks, and total shares. Stats are available one hour after a Note is posted and will refresh each hour. Currently, this feature is available on the web, with plans to bring it to the Substack app in the future. Learn more about Notes stats here.
Tailor the reader listening experience with new read-aloud voices. Enhance your readers’ listening experience with new text-to-speech (TTS) voices in the Substack app. Publishers with TTS enabled can now choose from a variety of free voices, offering diverse genders, ages, and tones to bring their posts to life. Once selected, your chosen voice will apply to all future posts. Learn more about text-to-speech here.
Automated clipping for all video posts in the app. Make your video content more shareable with automated clipping. After posting a video or livestream, you’ll receive clips based on key moments of engagement. Review, save, and share them directly to Notes and platforms like Instagram, all from the Substack app. Clips can be found under the “Share clips” tab in your post stats. Learn more about clipping here.

Chatbot question of the week: How do you change the background color of your page?
To change the background color of your Substack publication:
Log in to your Substack account
Go to your publication’s Settings page
Click on “Branding” in the left navigation bar
Click on “Edit theme” next to Publication theme
In the Design section, choose your desired background color
The changes will be applied automatically. You can also use the shuffle icon at the top next to Branding for random color selections.

TEXT-TO-SPEECH IS A NECESSARY BASIC ACCESSIBILITY FUNCTION FOR DISABLED PEOPLE AND NEEDS TO BE AVAILABLE TO ALL PUBLICATIONS.
I am all for these wonderful features Substack has developed, AND it’s not helpful for some accounts to access multiple reader voices while disabled creators (like myself) with disabled audiences don’t have basic accessibility. I don’t have the capacity to voice over every post for my subscribers to have access, and I shouldn’t have to when this function exists. Do better.
agreed. I have MS and want to have this feature for myself and for my readers (many who follow me because they also have MS), but it's not in my options.
It’s so disappointing and honestly quite sad. How do you keep adding fancy features when basic accessibility isn’t available?
I understand that creates more profits for them, and so does access for the disabled community. I’d argue we a large part of Substack because we require so much more down time than the average person. Why not help us help their bottom line? I hope profit is not the only thing that matters to them and there is still a valid argument if it is.
perhaps they have to play to the biggest audiences first. Then deal with value added options and services for smaller groups.
It is after all a business, not a charity.
What an ableist and gross thing to say. Perhaps you didn’t see my argument above regarding how it could actually be more profitable for them AND accessibility is not charity. Myself and other disabled people are human beings who are contributing to this platform’s existence. We are not a “small group” and providing accessibility is a basic human right, PERIOD.
Hoping you get this feature soon 💖
I finally found the start button finally, but I have no idea how to select voices. Believe it or not it was kind of unntuitive define the text to speech button even though it's clearly visible at the top. I don't know how to make it more obvious. Maybe a face with a cloud that looks like it's speaking. Again how do you select personalized voices? It's completely unintuitive.
I can play articles of others who have the feature, and that feature for others to play my articles is not available. Substack mentions on their help page that it is a feature only available to some publications.
The ability to select the voice is in the settings of the publisher–you as a reader/listener do not have the ability to pick the voice. This also should be the standard, as some voices are harder to process than others.
Substack should provide these basic accessibility features for ALL publishers and readers.
Why is there no ability to edit my comment. I use voice to text to put it in but there are mistakes that I cannot correct. I don't like that. AI is particularly poor when it comes to speech input. For example two two and two. Notice how it doesn't know which one you're saying and didn't get it right in this post. Without the ability to edit it's almost worthless. It makes you look stupid.
I agree Lora… Substack must do better
Special thanks to you Lora for giving voices to those beings so easily forgotten. CHANT FOR NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA. from my late wife, poet and painter, Joie Cook Habitat Selected Poems 1981 - 2006 Zeitgeist Press.
O, rural, O rural
I feast on you
O rural, O grass roots,
Woods and fields.
Though I'm scared of the hinterland,
The bucolic origin of wheat,
Shy of timber ashes,
Terrified by nesting doves.
O, rural dominion of natural substance,
Take me back to the city where I belong,
Beside the refuse and the urban smells,
Alongside the asphalt at midnight.
Your green of the country has frightened me,
With nothing around but silence.
O rural, O rural,
I feast on you,
But let me leave calmly,
Away from the cows.
i hope this will work bcoz my phone or account is been hacked for long time
I am always impressed with how y'all keep evolving this platform. Thanks so much for moving things forward. Happy holidays, Substack team!
Analytics for Notes is much welcome. I’ve never been sure how much mine get noticed, or if they get noticed at all.
Absolutely! It's going to be very interesting to know for sure how well things are doing... 😎
However it doesn’t seem as if this is available to all publications 🤷🏽♀️
Exited about these continued updates!
And, I hit a milestone this week:
I made my first $1000 on Substack!
That's a great achievement! Well done... 😎
congrats!
I love the consistent background upgrades! I'd love to see the ability to *edit* custom buttons! Thanks for all you do!
🐑
That function exists, or am I missing something here?
I meant, once created, the ability to edit them. Use case: dusting off an older article for reposting and needing to update an outdated custom button with a better link.
You should be able to just delete the old one and add a new one when you edit the Draft, and update it that way... 😎
That's what I do now. Would just be nice to edit 😉
That's true. It would definitely save an extra step... 😎👍

Wondering what your plan is to deal with hate speech on this platform. I'm tired of being inundated with posts nazis, sexist, racists, transphobes - the list goes on. This week I unfortunately stumbled across a post by someone promoting pedophilia. There needs to be some kind of moderation because this platform isn't safe anymore.
What on earth must you be reading? I have never encountered any of these things... Literally none. And when you say it's not a safe platform, do you just mean you find something jarring or offensive because that's not what safety is about.
substack algorithm is random and will push whatever garbage onto my feed, unfortunately including stuff with racial slurs and transphobic remarks. i just read an essay yesterday by ismatu gwendolyn, an african writer, who is leaving substack because she's constantly being harassed by racists and substack refuses to do anything about it. you should read it.
https://ismatu.substack.com/p/substack-has-a-ngger-problem
I only read people I follow and never use the discovery tab. Perhaps that's why I never see this stuff.
Thank you for adding Notes stats. Looking forward to diving into them.
The new quote format is mostly good although I don’t like that it now hides the publication and post names. Sometimes I use this information to decide if I want to click through or not.
My thoughts exactly. And without these, how many won’t realise the intent of sharing is to direct them to an interesting post/publication? The quotes may be seen as standalone. The benefit shifts away from the creator.
Tutorial for how to operate on Substack?
Can someone on SUBSTACK please listen to me.
IF you do NOT have subtitles on these 'speech only' substacks you are depriving millions of deaf people!
Get a grip substack......even young people are deaf!
Excited to see the Notes stats!
As someone reliant on being able to listen rather than read, I'm grateful to Substack for making audio an option. Some of your writers appear to be ignorant of the option, however, and I've had to explain to them how it works. If I can't listen, I won't subscribe. I was happy to read that you offer voice options to writers, but it would be great if you provided that option for the listener. When I'm reading a post from an African American female writer, for example, it's disconcerting to have to listen to a 'white sounding' male voice. Thanks.
My complaint as a disabled writer is that I am not given the ability to have the text-to-speech voice reader for my subscribers. I have limited capacity and have to post less often so I can always include my own voice over. My compliant in these comments is that they are focused on more fancy features when not all publications have basic accessibility. I also think, as you mentioned, reader should be able to choose voice and speed as some of us also struggle process certain voice at certain speeds. Ugh! We will not stop fighting! 💖
I only subscribe to writers with the audio option. Several writers I have written didn’t seem to know that option exists
Unfortunately, we don’t all have the option. Maybe some writers have it and are not aware. I simply don’t have it at all. Substack says on their help page that only some of us have the option. Very disappointing.
That’s horrible. Is there someone to write in protest? That’s totally a disability rights issue
It very much is, which is why I’ve put in a request for the feature and posted in these comments repeatedly. They say they want feedback in the comments and it doesn’t seem like they are paying attention.
I agree. I will continue to reach out.
As an author account, I've looked around Settings and can't find how to enable Text To Speech. We would enable this option if we knew how
Thanks for updating the quote share for Notes! That has been weird for a really long time.
From what I've seen, I'm one of the few people that doesn't care about stats. While I understand their appeal on one level, stats promote homogenized articles (and notes) as people, whether consciously or not, bend their tone and delivery to that which came before with the best numbers.
For me, I’ve turned off all the features (that I'm able) that are designed to attract readers who want to be part of something because others are (display number of subscribers, etc.), and I try to ignore all stats. It’s a little hard when the dashboard pops up with its numbers in big font, but I’ve learned to click into another part of it rapidly.
I know I’m an outlier in this regard, but when you chase stats, you’re not going after originality. You’re going after that which worked before.
Again, I get the appeal. And I’m not entirely immune. It’s been promoted for a long time that popularity is the only measure of worth. But over concern with stats is like a wall that blocks our ability to see beyond the horizon.
thanksss
I love the new quote restacks - they're so aesthetically pleasing!
keep up with the great work!
One more thought, it would be great to be able to listen to notes. I'm pretty sure that's not an option.
Apparently only the content creator can choose a personalized voice, but actually it's more important for the end user to be able to choose the voice they would like to listen to.
Agree!!!
I installed the app but there's no ability to have it read out loud. I'm very disappointed and feel I was scammed and to installing the app which unfortunately does not work as described. Android OS.
I was for years on an artist website........they kept changing things.
A lot of us fought this BUT of course we were not heard.
STOP re-inventing.
When I first came on substack everything was easy.......now..............
Dang, unless somebody who is speaking to my concern. This used to be relatively easy to figure out. As of today, I don’t see how to fix my queue, and if I listen to one essay, from someone who I follow, or a subscription, I am then inundated by endless other podcasts many of which I would never have chosen to listen to. And I don’t seem to be able to shut it off either. Super annoying.
This post is an excellent example of why it’s not OK that you’re not able to edit your comments. I use dictation to write, and sometimes it doesn’t hear what I really said, or throws in a word that I didn’t use. As above.
I'm new to Substack and although I've struggled to get started and find my feet, I'm getting there.
Please give us the choice of having the feed default to Following instead of Home. Also, the ability to sort by Most Recent.
The addition of the Text To Speech play button is great, but the support page linked above does not describe how to enable it. How can author accounts add this feature? Also, does the Text To Speech pick up the alt text we enter? (For those of us who post mostly comics and other visual media.) Thanks...
Please turn off any and all auto playing video. Surely nobody wants it
Please make Read Aloud available on all my articles before you start adding voices. Only a couple of my articles have the Read Aloud feature.
Wouldn't it be great if text to speech voices came with an accent? I see a lot of French people write in English here (surely because I'm French and write in English) - would love to hear their texts read by a French accented voice. Not sure if AI is there yet, or if it is, how good the result it, but it should be an option to keep in mind.
That plus making ALL posts available in TTS for disabled readers (kinda basic inclusivity, don't you think?) and letting the readers choose the voices would be super duper.
Last, moderating the free press and their ilk so they don't ruin this platform like they did every other platform so far. They're called the "brown plague" not for nothing - they spread and infect everything they touch.
Thanks a bunch, Substack peeps! Happy holidays :)
I used to love the text to speech option to listen to newsletters while preparing a meal, for example. I could queue up several newsletters in the order that I wanted to hear them and then hit play. I could be hands free chopping veggies or doing things getting my hands dirty without having to babysit the app to change to the next newsletter I want read. Now, I have no control over the playlist. It's automatically populated and I cannot set the order of what I want to listen to. I have to manually choose a newsletter to hear because I can't queue others up or arrange an order - that is all selected by some algorithm over which I have no control. I also used to be able to choose a voice (there used to be a choice of two), now it seems only the author can choose a voice for their newsletter. I hate the "new features" for text to speech that have been rolled out over the last several months.
Thank you so much.
Being sight challenged, this is a blessing to me. Wishing you a wonderful New Year filled with good health and happiness.
nice to hear all these details and evolutions but I am feeling that Substack is becoming another massive source that requires scrolling forever to get to my preferred subscriptions and then they are not set w newest first. I’ll find a 2wk old HRC messages up front and not be able to see her most recent one. It also does not give me the option to unsubscribe from earlier subscriptions. You may be getting too big for me.
Obviously Substack, with all of the upgrades, will be taking a bite out of you tube and facebait. Good for you!!!
Where do I get a tutorial on how to use this platform? Not dumb just not savy
Great, thanks! Hopefully it's now easier for people to highlight quotes? I've been advising to start highlight at the *end* of a quote, but that would be more authoritative coming from you. 😀 Assuming it's still necessary to avoid posting random words. 😂
I wish I knew how to do this!
The first Executive Order Trump will issue will be to allow victims of corporate CENSORSHIP, ie. YouTube has banned you, to file a complaint with the DOJ to investigate their CENSORSHIP & ask the DOJ to prosecute YouTube. Then you can sue. People’s POWER. What do you think? TheHighwire.com
Great idea. YouTube is slandering people by claiming they are engaging in hate speech when there's nothing hateful being posted, just a different opinion from those that run YouTube.
Substack is a wonderful platform but it heaviy weighted towardd the Industrialized ot Developed Countries. In many resprcts,it rnhances the ignorance of Americans because ,for example,AI is threat to the peoples of the Developing or Third Countries where most of the global population live and work.
In The Bahamss where I live, there.is a region where there are no commrrcial banks so cashless community is decades away. There goverment.agencies in most Caribbean states that are still functioning at the level of third.Industrial Revolution. These are just a couple of examples.
The important question is what are the implication of AI on societies like mine?

When “Notes” is mentioned, I think of Apple’s Notes.
Is that what is being referred to?
I am new here but have been collecting thoughts on Apple Notes for years and would love to see a seamless way to integrate and publish on Substack from there!

Hej kochanie
This is all great stuff but for now I'm happy where I am. When I worked for The Daily Collegian I was more of the "adult" in the room. I did a lot of cutting and pasting ads in the advertising department. I never ever thought what I had to say mattered. But must say with God and Andy Borowitz I must say that it's nice when people agree with me from time to time.
I don’t want notices read aloud to me. How do I stop substack from something I did not ask for?
Nobody is responding my posts !
....
I’m still waiting to hear from you after several attempts. 🤬
The latest development is cool.
Good updates 💙

I like and Love USA President Donald Trump
I signed on to Substack tpo read / follow Robert W. Mallone, MD
HOW DO I GET THERE?
Thanks! Charles C. Adams, MD
Read Aloud, no longer appears in my settings. Read Aloud when it was there, would not change from Oliver. More work required I guess? I tried to submit a ticket, but your AI is dumb as a box of rocks.
I have a complaint. How do I forward it to you?
There's no way to do that, Michael. Unfortunately. Used to be actual support where you might get a question answered, but it's all AI chat bot stuff now that covers the basics (which you can simply google), but offers nothing for in issue that's not in a basic help article.
You can ask something here, and you might get some help from another user. But Substack itself has left the support part of the platform to wither. Good luck.
TABLES: Can we get some basic tables? I don't need to do fancy functions or anything, but outlining a handful of data in a table is something Substack has been missing for me. I can do it in markdown, I figured I could do it on here.
I don't know much about Tik Tok. Give me a short tutorial please. The little I have read about it............. Ban it!
i would like to use the read aloud , it give me a way of seeing if ive spelt something wrong , im not sure how to use on here i have to publish the note then edit it , i think a video of how to use the tools on the site would be a good idea , so you can see how to use the site in the right way.
I'm glad to build on this platform. I missed the stats on Notes, amazing to hear that!
Happy Holidays 🎁
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Very good 👌👌👌👌👌
come posso vedere il testo tradotto in automatico sena doverlo copiare su PAPAGO per farlo tradurre ?
This is awesome. As I continue to branch and feel more comfortable, this is such an empowering experience.
You guys are doing great, you are developing well. Good luck to you and to all of us, the p-articipants of Substack.
I post a comment, but see a word or two that I’d like to correct. Is there a way I can correct with out copy ing and reposting?
These are wonderful additions to Substack, but you know what would be nice? If footnote numbers actually linked to the footnotes.
https://g.co/gemini/share/646c985c5e7e
Now if only we could customize text alignment in our posts...
Awesome improvements, very nice! I have a completely unrelated suggestion: Add a new category called "Shitposting." I suppose a less vulgar option would be "memes and tomfoolery", but "shitposting" is the correct term. It's very popular.
Also please don't censor or ban people, I love free speech and Substack, and I don't want this place to turn into 1984. Thanks and keep up the good work.
YES, have a great Holiday
This is wonderful news! The Stats on the Notes are going to be so useful to help figure out what's working and what isn't. Thanks for adding them. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all... 🎄😎🎄
The echo chamber paywall of substack is yet another contributing disinformation source. A reasonable monthly fee should dlllow access to 10 authors so that debate and meaningful discussion can occur and authors are not just feeding red meat to their fan base. More nuanced discussion and writing would follow.
Why would I pay 120$ a year to Dr Vinay Prasnd to challenge his anti vax rhetoric and suggestions that Fauci should be prosecuted?
The T2S function used to be controlled by the enduser. Somehow, Substack chose to drop that. T2S is pretty randomized now, and it feels awkward now.
I can't stand being read to.
Substack is my happy place. Thank you so much for building this paradise for independent writers and creators to get our work out there. The communities we build unite us all better than any social network you can name.
I have just recently unveiled my new story/ screenwriting method called Dual Story Structure.
My introductory essay to DSS can be found here on Substack at allanier.substack.com.
I'm also rounding out my 30th Anniversary as a writer in this last month of 2024. My 30th Anniversary essay "Discreet and Subtle Charm of Filmgoing" can also be found at my newsletter Final Cut.
Word search & place marker.
Any chance a searchable word feature can be incorporated in articles? And also a long term but temporary last word read place marker feature something like what Google maps uses i.e. pin or star. Articles I read here are pretty lengthy. Wonderful site BTW!
I am a paid subscriber to Andy Borowitz. However, I no longer get the email notification of new posts. How do I resolve this issue?
I love the changes that are going on. However, could I please ask that as you lure people over from Twitter and TikTok, especially people who already have huge followings there, could you please not forget that there are some of us who are struggling to attract readers and paying subscribers? If you subsidize and promote people who already have big followings, you're sucking the oxygen out of our reach.
For the last six weeks, I've been receiving a cavalcade of new subscribers, all beefy men with smiling bio headshots, one shirtless. I assume they're bots, not interested in reading my Substack, which is about the writing life. Why is there this sudden flood of beefcake bots and how can I stop them? I do delete or block - is Substack aware of this happening generally?
I'm loving these posts, and I really like how things are going forward as we come to the close of the year...
Huh.
I’m a retired senior citizen who, like many of us old-timers, has struggled to utilize the wonders that a computer offers. While I have had some successes, I realize that I may have - at least for the time being - bitten off more than I can chew with Substack. There are so many areas in which I have unfinished business & I need to get better control of them first, so I’ll be bowing out. Best wishes to all!
Hi Substack administration, and Happy Holidays!
While you’re preparing your retraction of yesterday’s statement of affiliation with the “Free Press”, and the accompanying apology to the vast number of readers who were offended by it…have a look at the comments section of The Guardian. It’s got so many features that writers love, such as logging of comments by author, capabilities for italics, boldface, and preview, and proper access without searching through a complicated set of filters. I’m sure others will have suggestions, and I look forward to seeing the result.
Thank you.
Because my audience includes many artists whose industry is being destroyed by AI voices like this, and I do my own podcasts and reading of my articles, I need to disable TTS. I literally write a publication about inclusivity, so appreciate the need but I will provide it using human talent. Humans who do not want to be replaced by AI.
Please let me know how this can happen. Thank you.
Just a question—I’m having trouble getting into ChatBot for the past few weeks. Any reason why? I was really getting into using it. Thanks.
How do you use the read-aloud voices? They don’t work on mine; do you need to have a minimum subscriber count to make it work?
Thank you Substack! This is now the only social media platform I am on :-)
I was so disappointed to see the selection of new AI voices (all American!) whilst you also apparently removed the function to record your own voice on the “create a video” option on sharing posts. Isn’t Substack about exciting and unique voices? This doesn’t add up, sorry 😭
I am relatively new to reading Subatack and I love it. One idea - I can't afford to be a paid subscriber to everyone I would like to support. Has anyone ever thought about instituting a flat monthly or yearly rate that would let a person subscribe to a fixed number of people at a rate that would be fair to those who post, but also allow subscribers to support more posters?
Can you make the Android app function properly?
It disappears from the background apps when I switch to browser to copy a link. Then it totally refreshes which makes copying a link impossible.
In addition, when I tap a notification for a note, it takes me to the notes homepage, not the specific note from the notification. Have to search the author to find the note if you want to see it/comment bad enough.
There is not option to edit comments on the android app.
There are many other problems that make Substack difficult to navigate on mobile.
On a positive note: it works great in browser on desktop.
I love this thing, and I want to see it succeed, but please make it functional on mobile.
Notes stats is a brilliant addition!
Keep up with the good work!
keep up with the good work
Please fix website notifications so they work properly. Basic stuff.
PS And don't pair with racist/Zionist weirdy websites that defend genocide.
I would ask that substack find away to facilitate payments to more countries, stripe has a service called stripe connect for non stripe nations.
So much love for this platform and all you're doing.
These are great updates - looking forward to playing with the voices!
Hey Substack, I reached out several times via support ie your ai bots to address an issue with my notes tab, their was no response. Notes tab are not showing for my publication. Its all enabled etc. What are you going to do about this? It's been over 2months folks. Hope someone will reach out.
Can we remove "followers" now that its proven that they dont see our Notes? I mean, wasn't that the point of it all?
Sent! ⚡️🌈⚡️
So helpful ❤️
Having more stats available with Notes is fantastic, but did you change something with Notes' algorithm? I am not posting every day, but usually my Notes had quite a consistent number of likes and now it seems it has dropped drastically.
Is someone else experiencing the same thing?
I left here a couple of feature requests by the way 😅

You did a really good on this one. The whatever algorithm you have to create automatically the clips work pretty well.

Thank you to so many for sharing how to make Substack more accessible. I support all writers/publishers have access to text-to-speech. And I support the use of subtitles on all audio-only posts. Hoping those in control of these decisions are still listening here.
I’m wondering if I’m the only one who has this problem: I have the different read-aloud voices in my settings, but they don’t stick. As in: My read-aloud voice is always a female one with an American accent, and no matter which one I choose in the settings (male, female, AE, BE), it stays that.
Just me?
