Hate to be discouraging, but we Americans at least (not sure of your nationality) have done a poor job of encouraging young people to use their Chinese language and cultural skills to work for our private and public institutions. I've made appearances at universities to promote my books and there are no Americans in the audience. Everyone is either mainlanders or Chinese-Americans, with the odd Ukrainian thrown in. It is a kind of intellectual colonization that we have allowed. Meanwhile, the generation of China watchers who have guided Western policy for a generation are fading away and aging out. Until we in the West get serious about gearing up our understanding of China and the Chinese language, young folks such as yourself are going to be discouraged.
