Responsive to Bill's question about all the words pouring out of Beijing, I suspect we are detecting an increased ideological trend toward asserting the party's interests not only in China but around the world. When Xi talks about adjusting international rule-making bodies, he wants them to make rules in China's favor. It's the same with setting technological standards. It's the same as trying to dictate terms to Australia. It's the same as trying to establish Huawei as the world's leading provider of wireless communications. It's the same as spending $1 trillion on BRI. I suspect Xi really believes that the Communist Party has the right to shape the entire world in its image. The laws they have been passing have been global in nature. A Chinese entity must cooperate with Chinese intelligence anywhere in the world. Hong Kong's security law can be applied to anyone in the world.
