From what I’ve gathered, watching foreign press reports (our own press is fairly worthless at this point in history), the Israelis were relying a whole heck of a lot on some pretty fancy schmancy technology on that fence, which was short circuited and defeated by Hamas. It was also a major holiday that fell on Shabbat. If the Israeli people had been permitted to have weapons without jumping through a million gun control hoops, the outcome might have been a little different.

As they say, never attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity.
