I think both Ken and Merrill are correct. China in 1974 in some ways was better than 1949 as Ken provided the relevant stats. However, it’s’ undeniable that mass human suffering occurred due to Mao’s wild policies as Merrill pointed out. My personal view is that if CCP’s policy had been more insane, China should have been much better in 1974 than it actually was.
