Demographics is a key factor but hardly the most important one. If that were the case, people would be talking about China as the next India rather than India as the next China, and Saudi Arabia would be leading the world. China in 1949 had much more favorable demographics than 1990. Governance and political stability played far more important roles in those cases, IMHO.
