Absolutely. China is at the sharp end of global warming, both from Himalayan ice melt and river disruption, and desertification in the north. It has 20pc of the global population but 6pc of its renewable fresh water. It will be hit very hard by 1.5 degree plus world sooner than most of the West.
It is also isolated in Glasgow. My impression covering COP26 last week is that the North-South fight no longer really works. There are an awful lot of poor countries that want to move much faster on decarbonisation. They are increasingly turning their wrath against China. If they leave this event without offering more, it will be a watershed moment, viewed in the developing world as a fundamental failure of Chinese leadership. India has completely outflanked China.
So yes, the stakes are high.
On Xi. I think his green evolution is fascinating. You might want to read this brilliant account by Jianqiang Liu from Carbon Brief, which I have also written a piece about. It was a real eye opener.
