Tim Scott clarifies his position on abortion after flubbing it the day before

Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina on Thursday in New Hampshire said that he would support a federal 20-week ban on abortion as he sought to clarify a muffed response to several questions about the issue the day before.

Allow me to explain: Scott had four chances on Wednesday to state whether he supports a national abortion ban like the one Sen. Lindsey Graham, his colleague from South Carolina, proposed after the Dobbsdecision last summer that would prohibit abortion after 15 weeks.

Instead, he simply restated that he was 100 percent against abortion, which one has to do nothing but look at his voting record to see. And he falsely claimed Democrats support “late-term abortions well into the third trimester, some even suggesting that we should have abortion up until the day of birth.”

Scott has launched an exploratory committee to whether he should set up an official campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

The rumor mill: There are whispers around Washington that speculate Scott’s run for the top spot is actually an audition to be vice president for whoever wins the nomination.

Elsewhere: The Florida state legislature just voted to ban most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy — when most people don’t know they’re even pregnant yet.

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis — another prospective 2024 hopeful — is expected to sign the bill into law and campaign on it if he in fact decides to run for president.

The strategy of most Republican presidential candidates will be to run to the right of former President Donald Trump to secure the primary before attempting to moderate towards the center in a general election against President Joe Biden.

Easier said than done considering Trump’s poll numbers within the party has gone up since his indictment last week.
