Oh a collapse seems quite possible. China is taking leadership in technology. The USA is too corrupt and change-averse to compete, and too proud and greedy to contract gracefully. Short of nuclear war it seems a matter of time.

But their being fed up doesn't have anything to do with the empire. Many are not even aware that the empire exists. What these people want is money. The empire brings in money. So most likely doubling down on the empire extracting wealth from the hated, despised foreigners. That's what happened in Napoleon's France and imperial Japan, Germany, and Italy. Trump announced to his followers that the USA was extracting oil from Syria and (hopefully) Venezuela in order to boost their pocketbooks. Said followers raised no protest.
