I’m actually writing to comment on the afternoon podcast, in which Charlie and Mona argued that one reason to fear Biden deciding not to run is that a D primary would almost certainly result in Kamala Harris getting the nomination. I don’t agree with this at all. First, there’s no way she clears the field. She’s just not popular enough with the broad D electorate. And people who would be far stronger candidates would get in the race and almost certainly run stronger campaigns. In 2020, she didn’t even make it to Iowa. Sure, some people would vote for her because she’s Black or because she’s a woman, but if Gretchen Whitmer or Cory Booker or Gavin Newsome or Jared Polis or Chris Murphy got in they would probably clean her clock. I think Whitmer is the strongest of all of them and would probably get 400 electoral votes against Trump. The nominee would be chosen by voters, and at least these days, D voters care more about winning than whose turn it is.
