"The Black Snake of Wounded Vanity" is a line from Part 5, chapter 1 of "Crime and Punishment," the brilliant 1866 novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky, who I am not a little obsessed with. I love the line. It speaks to me as a writer, thinker, American, man.
