Quite right. Anyone who got annexed by the USSR and experienced the blessings of the resulting relationship had nothing more urgent to do than seek protection.

The core of the trouble may be, that everyone was welcome to NATO and welcome to the US. Everyone got support and cooperation, except for the Russians, IMHO.

The US seems to have never forgiven Russia for the USSR.
