Don't know if you know this but it started out as a serious anti war movie like "Paths to Glory", but when he started writing the script realized the absurdity of the whole thing and changed it to a satire.

If you look closely at the scene of the b52 flying over Alaska you can see shadows of propellers on the ground. He decided to leave it in. My favorite scene was Slim Pickens riding the Hbomb down strapped between his legs. The ultimate phallic phantasy.
