Intentions follow capability - as China grows in power its rhetoric becomes harsher and ambitions higher. If the US were able to constrain and contain Chinese power and tip the balances overwhelmingly against it with alliances, I predict you would see softer rhetoric and even a (very slow) reversion back to a position where TW is a separate entity from China, so as not to lose domestic legitimacy.

The flip side is true as well
