When Yellen made the comment, the thought that went through my mind was that she sounded like Xi Jinping and virtually all of the Chinese officials and business leaders with whom I have had experience over the past forty years. "Security" has always been the overwhelmingly most important consideration of the Chinese Communist Party. For close to thirty years, we believed that we were living at the end of history (to quote Frank Fukuyama) and that, as George W. Bush said, free trade and globalization would inevitably plant the seeds of democracy and capitalism in China. On March 3, 2018, The Economist shocked the high priests of the conventional wisdom by saying in its cover story that the West had made the "Wrong Bet" on China. Let me suggest that it's not so much a matter of Beijing imitating Washington as it is of Washington realizing that history is not over and imitating China to some extent.
