With respect I would argue that it is not an obsession and not about posturing. China is now demonstrating in its punishment of Australia what it is prepared to do to countries who disagree with it while also being significantly dependent upon it. Indeed, China's discipline is being obviously exercised even in the U.S. at this moment. Pro basketball managers no longer tweet about Hong Kong, and John Cena is apologizing on Chinese social media for inadvertently referring to Taiwan as a country. Ask yourself when the last time was that the Dalai Lama was invited to speak at a University or college in the U,S. or the last time he appeared at the White House. The U.S. is being forced to compete with China for leadership in a range of key industries and technologies because not to do so would be to condemn oneself to increasingly becoming a vassal of China.
