He was always very nonjudgmental. I had the privilege of having lunch with him once, as a young grad student in Hawai'i, just my friend who knew him, and me, and this incredible man with whom I was utterly in awe. We had Thai food, which he loved, and Mai Tais, ditto, and I sat there completely tongue-tied. Could scarcely utter a word. He had a good time nevertheless, in his eighties with two comely lasses falling all over him. Lovely guy, he was.
