Sounds like a hoop house, a green house or raised beds might be in order. You have a lot of varmints, have you got a dog? I recommend a Jack Russell Terrorist, they will help immensely and you won't need to set on your porch with your Mossberg Persuader cradled in your lap. Which is how some people I know deal with this situation, but where I live the garden is your food, your very survival, it's you or them. But I cannot shoot a one of them, though I would love to see them gone. Where I lived in the past I had wild rabbits that I fed, I would give them carrots and they came to my call. Life can be a Disney movie sometimes. I also had deer that got so hungry in the dry, dry fall, they would eat anything including mint. The worst are the squirrels, they know how to organize. I've woken to a loaded apple tree stripped overnight, and realized they worked as a team. It's an endless battle, as you say. We've got some feral cats running around right now and I'm happy about it, a better year for gopher control. I've had friends lose everything.
