It's also worth noting that all this also occurred before a backdrop of widespread perception that democratic states (esp. the US) had shot their bolt, and that the future belonged to "vigorous" authoritarian states like Germany. It is very hard indeed not to draw obvious parallels, and to do so is profoundly disturbing given how events unfolded in the 1930s. We can only hope that history will not repeat itself!
