When winning is more important than how you won, is how.

Not just in sports either. Business, politics, arts&crafts, careers&professions: winning is winning, and ethics are for losers, has been a very strong undertow in Western culture ever since the 1980s (1980s in my cultural frame of reference obviously).

Video/computer gaming, especially online and even more so with pay-to-win options and such, exacerbated this until it bled back into mainstream culture (sports in this case).

Heck, think back to aracades. The not-so-wealthy guy who could lap around Super Mario Bros. on the machine on a single coin was King of the Hill; the rich kid who could just pour on coins and buy extra plays was scorned.

But the latter would strut around and claim to be the winner anyway.

If you see what I'm angling for? (And if I'm making sense in the first place...)
