My one addition is that a man grandstanding without having the standing to do so, will be laughed at by other men. Think Tim Waltz play-acting as a hunter.

And as you mention, the hotshots lack the discipline for the long haul. Becomes very obvious when you do long marches. The skilled, disciplined and spiritually/mentally humble will endure and triumph even with poor or no gear. The glory boys give up, whining and bitching about something or other being unfair. Dad's career military, corps of combat engineers, so I have a bias here of course, but it's at least an experience-based bias.
