Here in Canada, we had the great COVID-19 police round-up of dissidents and crazed anti-vaxxers, some of them Christian pastors who dared to hold church services in person, even on (gasp) Easter Sunday.
Many police officers showed themselves quite willing to wrestle teenagers to the ground for skating outside on a frozen pond, or to arrest a mother who took her child to his grandparents before she went to work, or to hog-tie and haul into a paddy wagon an unruly pastor who embarrassed the state. Having too many people to your house at Christmas could result in a police raid.
Many of these guardians of the state participated in the fairly brutal suppression of the truckers convoy that protested the vaccine mandates. An old Indigenous woman was injured by being trampled under an RCMP officer's horse, and nobody gave a damn.
I heard about quite a few police officers taking early retirement or outright quitting the force because they couldn't stomach what they were being asked to do. Many others, however, went along, some quite enthusiasitcally. After the suppression of the truckers convoy, text messages from RCMP were shared showing them laughing and joking about their role in the operation.
I've met some police officers who seemed very decent, but on the whole I have lost faith in them.
