It wasn't just a fear of their own mortality. It was just as much about "losing" social status, income, "privileges", etc., etc. Typical outcome of a prisoners dilemma...everyone ended up losing because they couldn't realize they were actually working against their own interests by being unilaterally "selfish". You can dupe yourself into anything if you know your being selfish.
